Being able to open the windows in your home is necessary to let in fresh air, to regulate the temperature and to help with ventilation. If you are unable to open a window, then the room can get stuffy and may even become smelly or mouldy. So having an operational windows is a must. But, windows can fail. So what do you do when your window is stuck or jammed shut? Read on…
There are probably window companies in your area that can help resolve these situations, although their main business is usually replacing windows and that is often their recommended resolution which can be costly.
However, you might be surprised to hear that good locksmiths can resolve window issues such as this because often it is the locking element of the window that may have failed.
This article focuses on uPVC windows (the most common type in the UK) and will highlight the main reasons that your window will not open along with probable remedies.
In this situation, you need to get the handle to unlock so you can open the window. Only when the handle is turned can you remove it in order to replace it with a new one (with a key).
Window handle locks are basic and it will need to be picked to unlock it. Read the previous Lock Guy article about picking locks to find out how to do this.
Do not attempt to force the handle as you will likely end up unnecessarily damaging the window and/or the locking mechanism which will then make what should have been an inexpensive repair into a costly one.
If you are not sure or confident about picking the lock, then call your local reputable locksmith.
This normally means that the handle has failed. When you press the button on a uPVC window handle this should release the catch enabling the handle to turn. But this catch can break off jamming up the handle.
The way to resolve this is by inserting a thin yet rigid material into the gap between the moving part of the handle and the static part of the handle.
The idea is to bypass the catch by lifting it into the correct position.
Alternatively, it is usually possible to force the handle to turn as the catch is normally made of plastic that can be intentionally broken to rotate the handle.
This may be due to the fact that the spindle (long rectangular metal rod) has become disengaged. Everything should work if the spindle is connected to the handle and to the locking mechanism in the window.
To check this, remove the handle by unscrewing the two screws (one may be concealed by a small cover). Once off, check that the spindle is attached to the handle and that it rotates as you turn the handle. If not either secure the spindle into the handle again, or get a replacement handle with the correct length spindle.
If the handle is OK, then check the mechanism by inserting the spindle into it and turning. Sometimes the spindle can move or slide up the handle. In which case, just reposition the spindle in the handle so it properly engages with both the handle and the gearbox locking mechanism.
If the handle is working OK, but the gearbox does not turn, then the issue is with the locking mechanism.
The main issue here is getting the window open. Once it is open, then you can deal with the problem. But getting it open can be a challenge.
Firstly, remove the handle.
Then you need to create a gap between the window and the frame. Specialist tools are available. Use something with a wide thin edge to spread the load to avoid damage. uPVC windows do have a certain degree of flexibility that you can take advantage of.
Once a gap is formed, you need to locate the ‘cam’ (the round cylindrical component that slides along the mechanism – see image below). You need to pull on this (some people use an allen key clamped with a vise grip) with force to manually move it to the unlocked position.
When trying to manually move the locking mechanism make sure you are not putting any pressure on the window (i.e. release the tool that you used to create the gap).
If that does not work, try removing the glass from the window (again having the right glazing tools is a great help). Once the glass is removed, there is much more flexibility in the window and then the window locking points can be bypassed.
Once open, unscrew the locking mechanism. The central gearbox (pictured) can be replaced. You will need to source an identical part from a window hardware supplier.
Sometimes the handle and the central gearbox can be OK, but the issue is with the locking strip that runs along the edge of the window. Again the whole mechanism should be able to be purchased.
Care must be taken as selecting the right replacement part can be difficult and sometimes certain parts are no longer made and available.
If a window has not been opened for a long time and has not been well maintained, then the hinge mechanism can seize up preventing the window from opening.
In this case, force may be the only option. Turn the handle to the open position. Hold a flat strong piece of wood against the window and use a mallet to hammer against the wood (to prevent damage to the window) testing different areas of the window.
Once opened, apply a generous amount of lubricant. It may be necessary to replace the hinges.
