If a household key all of a sudden does not work, there can be a number of reasons for this and there are certain things to try that might resolve the situation. This article, written by Lock Guy (a professional locksmith based in Essex), explores the various potential explanations as to why this issue may occur and looks at possible solutions on what to do if your key does not work.
It is important to try to deduce the cause of the problem in order to select the appropriate corrective action.
The first thing to understand is whether the key is at fault, or whether it is another issue. When it comes to cylinder locks, if the key actually rotates, then the key itself is likely not the issue. But if you cannot rotate the key, then it may be a sign that there is an issue with the key.
Regardless of the type of key, if you have, or can get hold of another key, then it is worth testing this other key before you do anything else.
Keys are made of a soft alloy and they can become easily damaged or worn over time. People have a tendency to use keys as a general tool for things like opening parcels & tins or cutting things – but this can lead to your key becoming damaged. If the profile/shape of the key is only slightly altered, then it will not work in the lock. Inspect the key for any obvious signs of damage to verify if the key looks damaged.
If possible, try using a spare key. If you do not have another key, then the damaged key can sometimes be copied and replaced without replicating the faulty area so it might be worth consulting your local key cutting company. Failing that, you will have to call out a locksmith to gain entry if you have a damaged key and no other key to try.
Locks are made up of some precision components and if these areas become dirty or dry, then the lock can become jammed meaning that you may not be able to insert the key fully, or you are unable to turn it. Therefore, try squirting a good quality lubricant into the keyway (the part where the key is inserted into).
A graphite based lubricant is best. If that is unavailable, then a silicone or PTFE lubricant will suffice. It is not advisable to squirt WD40 into the lock. After lubricating, try the key again. Read my article on Maintaining Locks for more information.
If it is a double euro cylinder and there is a key inserted into the lock, then that means that the key on the other side will not work. Try to check if this is the case by visually checking the other side if possible (e.g. look through a window, or attach a small mirror to a rod and look through the letterbox). Sometimes by rapidly tapping the lock from the other side can get the key to gradually rotate on the other side. Once the key is in the vertical position it can usually be poked out by inserting the key firmly on the side without the key. If this does not work, you will have to call a locksmith.
These are often the most challenging situations. If the lock or locking mechanism has failed in some way, then it is going to be very difficult to access. Read the previous article about what to do when your door is stuck shut.
Probably in this situation, the best thing to do is call a locksmith as there is unlikely to be a ‘DIY’ solution.
Often the issue is not with the key, the lock or the locking mechanism. It can be that the door itself is not aligned correctly and that has caused the locking points to jam in the door frame. This commonly happens in periods of particularly wet/cold or hot weather. It can also just occur over time.
In this instance, if the key rotates but the door does not open, it is a good idea to try to alleviate the pressure on the jammed section by pulling or pressing on the door whilst turning the key. Try different combinations of pressure (without excessive force) in different areas whilst being careful that the key does not break. Otherwise, if you can access the other side of the door, then some door hinges are adjustable with the door closed.
