How to maintain your locks

To maintain your door locks effectively, start with routine cleaning. Dust and grime can accumulate inside the lock, affecting its performance. Use a can of compressed air to blow away debris and follow up with a gentle application of a lock-specific lubricant to ensure smooth operation. Remember to clean both the lock cylinder and the keyway.

Cylinder barrels should be periodically lubricated to prevent failure and increase their lifespan. However, DO NOT use WD40.

Whilst WD40 and similar products are excellent products with multiple uses, they can actually cause harm and damage to your door locks.

Although it’s generally used as a lubricant, the combination of the chemicals within WD40, actually has the effect of drying out the actual lubricant the lock already has – which would only make a stiff lock stiffer or sticky over time!

Likewise, WD40 and other similar products can attract dust and dirt into your locking mechanism and lock which will affect how your lock works.

So, as a locksmith, I would always advise anyone wanting to maintain locks that it’s best to use a graphite powder based lubrication solutions for cylinder locks. These are readily available online or from DIY and hardware stores.
