Smart locks are locks that can be operated without the need of a key. They can be locked and unlocked with your phone, a fob, a keypad and/or a fingerprint. They can be operated remotely and you can easily grant or withdraw access to multiple people without ever needing to manage physical keys. These types of smart locks are increasing in popularity as we take more and more advantage of the technological developments in society that make our lives more convenient. The Nuki smart lock works in conjunction with your existing door lock if it currently has a euro cylinder lock fitted (normally used on uPVC and composite doors). It does not work with mortice locks or rim cylinders (normally found on wooden doors). It is a retrofit smart lock in that you can fit it to your door if it has a euro cylinder lock.

The Nuki smart lock works with multi-point locking mechanisms. Please note that if you have to physically lift the door handles to operate the door locking mechanism, then you will still have to do this as the Nuki does not lift the handles for you. The Nuki replaces the key turning part by rotating it with a motor.
The Nuki is fitted on the inside of your door – there is no change to the external side (apart from it will have a different euro cylinder lock). If your door has a handle, the outside handle will be the same, but the inside handle will have to change. The inside handle supplied is adaptable to fit the vast majority of doors, but not every door. It comes in different finishes.
Be aware that the distance between the centre of the handle and the centre of the keyway (on the inside side of the door) must be 92mm (this is known as the ‘PZ’ and 92mm is standard – although there are other sizes that would not be compatible with the Nuki). You will be able to control your door lock from anywhere as it comes with built-in WiFi control.
It has an auto-unlock feature that you can enable so all you have to do is walk up to the door (as long as you have your bluetooth enabled smartphone) and it will unlock automatically.
It has a manual override and you can still use a key on it’s 3* high security euro cylinder.
The Nuki is compatible with smart platforms like Google Home, Apple Home, Alexa, etc.
Recharging is easy and you do not have to remove it from the door when charging.
It has a brushless motor meaning that it is quick and quiet when in operation which is a lot better than previous Nuki versions and it’s competitors.
The packaging is understated, but functional. Inside, everything is well secured in separate sections. There are minimal instructions – only QR codes to scan based on your particular door setup, but even those online instructions are limited.
The design of the Nuki itself looks nice with a sleek modern appearance.
The actual fitting is simple and should require no drilling. You just replace the euro cylinder and then fit the handle or escutcheon. The Nuki just rotates to click into position.
From then you just need to download the app and follow the logical steps.
Fitting and setting up should take around 10-20 minutes.
One of the key advantages is that you can operate the Nuki manually. So if you do not have your phone or the Nuki is out of power you can just rotate the Nuki with your hand to operate the lock from the inside. From the outside you can use the key with is a thick dimple style horizontal key with a unique security code preventing unauthorised key copies being made.
If your phone is lost or stolen or out of battery, then you may not be able to unlock your door if you do not have a key or a keypad/fob. Although, this issue is not unique to the Ultion Nuki – it is the same for all smart locks.
The Nuki does protrude reasonably far out from the surface of the door so it could get knocked/damaged or hit the wall if the door is opened too wide too quickly.
The Keypad could easily be tampered with or taken as it only slides/clicks on to the bracket and if someone wanted to cause problems for you they could steal the keypad (your property is still secure, but you may be inconvenienced and have lost an expensive accessory).
At the time of writing this article the Nuki smart lock is selling in the UK for £339. There is a cheaper version which is the ‘Ultion Nuki Go’ (at a cost of £239) but this does not come with wifi functionality or rechargeable batteries as standard and there are less options regarding the colour/finish available.
£339 is a pretty competitive cost for the base unit based on the functionality being provided. But the accessories (e.g. keypad, fob and even extra keys) are quite expensive so the costs can add up if you want those additions.
The Nuki smart lock is easy to set up and performs very well with many user options for maximum flexibility.
It comes with the £5k guarantee that means you get that money if someone breaks in through the lock, so the manufacturer is very confident with the security of the lock (but don’t forget to register the key to set-up the guarantee).
The Nuki is especially very good for managing access to a property with multiple potential users, e.g. AirBNB and other short-term let properties.
