Things to do when moving house

Moved into a new home recently? There’s a mountain of things to do when moving house but one of the most important is surely changing your locks.

We all know that moving home is an exciting and stressful time. There is so much to do and to remember. It is easy to overlook the security of your new home and not consider the locks that are installed.

Changing your locks is the only way to ensure that that you are the only one that has keys to your property.

Are you the only one with keys?

It is very plausible that the previous homeowners may still have keys to the property (surveys show that 32% of people in Britain still have copies of keys of their former home). Even if you completely trust them, there is no way of knowing how many keys they may have lost over the years and how many spare keys are in circulation.

As well as previous owners/tenants … cleaners, tradesmen, babysitters, neighbours, family members, friends, care providers and estate agents may all have copies of the keys to your home.

If you have moved into an older property, your locks may not have the security protection of modern locks and may not be insurance approved as some locks do not have the right features and/or quality level.

Unfortunately, a condition of most insurance policies is that you are not covered if there is no forced entry. This means that should someone enter your home with a key it can invalidate your insurance leaving you unprotected.

Even if you move into a new build property, the advice is still to change your locks. All manner of builders, tradesmen, site staff and estate agents may have keys to your home.

The good news is changing your locks can be surprisingly inexpensive. And it will provide the additional reassurance on the main access points to your home that protects you, your most precious possessions and your loved ones.
