Sash Jammers

What are sash jammers I hear you cry? A sash jammer is a small device that can improve the security of your uPVC windows and doors. It is an inexpensive product that is attached near the door or window frame and has an arm that can pivot over the door or window securing it into place.

Your doors and windows are the most vulnerable points of entry to your home. A sash jammer offers another level of security used in addition to the normal door/window locking mechanism that can help prevent forced entry.

What are sash jammers made from?

A Sash Jammer is usually made of metal and consists of two parts:

a fixed plate that is screwed onto the frame or sill of the window or door, and
a sliding plate that can be adjusted to fit tightly against the sash or leaf of the window or door.

When the sash jammer fitting is engaged, it creates a strong and secure connection between the frame and sash or leaf, making it much more difficult for an intruder to break in.

Any would-be burglar seeks out properties that are quick and quiet to enter. If they manage to get past the normal lock, then the sash jammer acts as another mechanical barrier that they would have to force through taking extra time and noise (which of course they usually want to avoid).

Sash jammers can be used as a temporary solution to protect a property if for some reason the normal locking mechanism is not available (e.g. the existing lock has failed and there is a new one waiting to be delivered).

But sash jammers should never be a permanent and only solution when securing a door or window. There is no substitute for a good quality well fitted lock and locking mechanism.

Are there different types?

These products can come in locking and non-locking versions depending on your requirements and are available in a number of colours.

Typically, you would fit two on a door and one on a window – but often it depends on the size of the door/window and the reason you want to install them.

They are a useful solution to protect vulnerable people in the home from getting out. For example, young mischievous children or people suffering with dementia who may be a danger to themselves and cannot be trusted and cannot be watched all the time. In these situations, fit a sash jammer on the inside of the door to stop them from getting out.

Just beware that once fitted, they become a permanent fixture (not that you have to use them all the time), but if they are removed, then the screw holes will be visible in the frame. You should also be aware that in the event of a fire, it may take extra seconds to open – especially if you have to find a key for the lockable version. Remember also that they are only operated from the inside, so when the sash jammer is in the engaged position, you will not be able to enter the door from the outside even if you have the door key.

However, overall, they are simple, practical, cheap and easy to fit and can offer an extra protection that might make all the difference.
