According to the definition in the Oxford English Dictionary, “a locksmith is a person whose job is to make, fit, and repair locks…”. Whilst, this is an accurate description, in practice nowadays, locksmiths don’t just do locks. Many locksmiths can and do much more than just work on locks and on locking mechanisms.

Whilst some locksmith’s may have quite a narrow approach to the work that they take on, it is always worth asking, “whilst you are here, could you please have a look at…”. A professional reputable locksmith will carry all manner of tools that could be used for a variety of jobs and due to the nature of the job they do, they are skilled at problem solving and are effective at carrying out a whole range of practical tasks.
Apart from specialist locksmith tools, the general tools a professional locksmith will carry include drill, chisels, hammer, saw, pliers, sander, ladder and screwdrivers. They will also likely to have various fixings, sealants, cleaning agents and glue. So a locksmith should have the tools for all general household maintenance tasks.
Because locksmiths work on a lot of wooden doors, they are often skilled at carpentry work. This does not mean they are carpenters and for large/complex jobs it is always better to find a dedicated carpenter. However, if there is a small carpentry job you need to get done and you are engaging the services of a locksmith anyway, then it might be worthwhile asking them if they would do that job too.
Similarly, any jobs that require specialist skills or qualifications (e.g. plumbing or electrician work), then it is best to get a professional in that trade.
