High Security Euro Cylinders

A Euro Cylinder is the most common type of door lock present in the UK. It is recognisable by it’s distinctive profile. There is a huge variation of Euro Cylinder locks available in the market, from the very cheap poor quality ones to the very secure High Security Euro Cylinders and sometimes very expensive high security euro cylinders, and everything in between.

The TS007 lock standard was first introduced in 2011 in an effort from the industry to demonstrate the level of security that Euro Cylinder has. This allows for certain Euro Cylinders to be marked with either a 1* or 3* designating that it has undergone certain tests to prove the security level it has.  This is normally displayed along with the BSI kitemark.

3* Cylinders

The 3* cylinder is the highest security classification and should be able to resist the known methods of forced entry, i.e. drilling, picking, bumping, snapping and pulling.

1* Cylinders, under BS3621, are tested for durability, fire resistance, corrosion resistance, temperature resistance, as well as security for the design, and attack resistance.  A 1* rating alone cannot pass the TS007 lock standard, since whilst it is resistant to drilling, picking and bumping methods of attack, it is not resistant to snapping.  If you combine a 1* lock with a 2* handle, then you would have achieved a 3* level under the standard.

Please note that some insurance companies may insist (or at least hide in the small print) that door locks should be up to a certain standard.

So, 3* cylinders have the highest security rating.  However, there is another variant of this: the 3* Sold Secure Diamond Standard, which provides the 3* TS007 rating alongside the highest standard of testing by the Master Locksmiths Association (Sold Secure Diamond).

If it's not installed properly it doesn't matter what star rating!

Be aware that if a High Security Euro Cylinder lock is not installed properly in the door, it may not perform to the level expected and therefore may not meet the required standard. So it may still leave your home vulnerable. It is always advisable to contact a locksmith for expert advice and installation.
