Handle does not operate the locking mechanism	This may be related to the handle and the spindle may not be engaged properly in the locking mechanism. However, it is more likely to be linked to the locking mechanism gearbox that may need to be serviced or replaced by a locksmith.
Handle is damaged (e.g. during a burglary attempt)	This will need a replacement handle to ensure that the integrity (mechanical strength) of the handle is not compromised.

Tips on Replacing a Handle

It is recommended to get a locksmith to supply and fit a new handle for multi-point doors to make sure it is done correctly and your property is secure. However, if you want to attempt to replace the handles yourself, then here are a few tips on selecting the right handle:

PZ (distance between centre of keyhole to centre of spindle). Check this dimension on both sides of the door as sometimes they can be different.

Try to purchase a replacement with a larger footprint than the existing one to make sure it covers any marks that may be visible after the old handles have been removed.
There are some adjustable handles available on the market that may avoid the need of drilling additional holes in your door.

Think about whether you want a lever or a pad on the outside (it is just down to personal preference).
Try to utilise the existing spindle(s) to ensure that the operation is not affected, e.g. Check if it is a split spindle or if it has offset handles (different height of handle on inside compared to handle on outside).
Think about the colour/finish and design to make sure it fits in with the overall look of the door.

High Security Handles

uPVC / Composite Door Multi-Point Handles do not all have the same level of security. Having a high security handle will improve the security to your home.

Features of high security handles include very strong material, a shape that is difficult to attack and some kind of cylinder shield.

There are a number of options available on the market, so be sure to look out for the TS007 2 star rating which demonstrates that it has been through the necessary testing to demonstrate it is classified as a high security handle.

Fix handle problems before they become bigger issues

It is important to check and correct any problems related to handles before it becomes a bigger more urgent issue. If your handle suddenly fails, you might find yourself locked out and unable to operate your door. If a problem is noticed, then it will only get worse over time, so it is better to address it as soon as possible. If you are unsure, then contact your local reputable locksmith.
